Description
Abraham Lincoln was acquainted with the photographer Alexander Gardner, who had worked for Mathew Brady at the beginning of the war. While still employed by Brady, Gardner had photographed Lincoln near Sharpsburg, Maryland, in early October 1862. At some point in early 1863 Gardner split from Brady and opened his own photographic studio in Washington. Lincoln is said to have promised Gardner that he would visit his new studio and sit for some portraits. He made good on the promise on August 9, 1863, visiting on a Sunday when the studio would be closed to the public.
