Winslow Homer the great
nineteenth-century American artist and illustrator is known principally for his
paintings of maritime themes often from the perspective that the sea can be a
terrible mistress. However this painting entitled, "Breezing
Up" begun in 1873 is an exception It is perhaps Homer's most popular
painting and portrays a cat boat named Gloucester chopping through the city's
Harbor under a fair wind. The painting depicts a man and three young boys. The
man holds fast to the main sail. On the stern is one of the boys manning the
tiller. The other two are enjoying the ride without a care in the world. And in
the cockpit is the day's catch. The composition is interesting in that
the painting is heavily weighted to the cat boat on the left while the right is
virtually open water and sky save for a schooner and a boat in the distance. The
balance of the activity and non activity
