today we're going to be building a summing or mixing cable these combine two or more audio channels into a single audio channel using a resistor network so they're essentially just a passive mixer a lot of people try to use y-shaped splitter cables for this purpose but these are not suitable for combining two signals and it can actually be dangerous to do so since the outputs will be low impedance and will attempt to drive each other at high currents potentially damaging the output amplifiers in the process Rane published a great article in 1991 explaining this problem and it's now on their website so I'll give you a link to that splitter cable should only be used for splitting one output into two inputs and even then it's not great ideas it can easily lead to things like impedance mismatches and ground loops this particular mixing cable is going to be used to combine the left and right
