in today's video we're going to be doing the newspaper test to test and see whether or not the fan clutch in my e39 is any good now in pretty much every BMW made up until around 2006 when they started eliminating the fan clutch also known as a viscous coupling basically every other BMW has one of these fan clutch assemblies in with a fan attached to help cool down the car and what happens is once this heats up the fluid inside of this locks our coupling into place and it allows the fan to spin and pull air through the radiator of the car to cool it now after two hundred and forty eight thousand miles like I have on this a thirty nine what happens is the fluid can fail in one of two ways either the fluid can stop in the position where this is fully locked and you'll have the fan working extra hard and engaged all the time that's probably the better way to fail because at least you still
