Polymer Crystal Gel Beads for DIY This is one of the most economical ways to keep your precious cigars safe and sound in your humidor. First of all, these are NOT SILCA BEADS. These are high quality super absorbent polymer crystals that when water is added, they turn into gels. These crystals absorb 300-400 times their mass worth of water (we recommend distilled water for maximum absorption). As the water depletes, the gels will get smaller and eventually turn back into crystals. As they get smaller in size (prior to turning back into crystals), it will be your cue to add water. These crystal beads are shipped to you dry, so before use you will want to charge them with a 50/50 distilled water / propylene glycol (PG) solution to regulate humidity. Or if you prefer, a “use everytime” solution may be used with the crystals instead. Neither of these solutions are included with your order, but we have them available for sale. You do not want to skip this important step. No matter what others might say, these crystal beads are not “pre-charged” with any PG whatsoever to help regulate humidity. You will receive enough crystals to make 1 liter of gel material. You will have enough gel to fill several tubes or jars. This is great if you have numerous humidors you are currently maintaining.
