A normal, healthy adult microbiome contains well over 1000 bacterial species as well as numerous archaea, fungi, and viruses. These microbes and humans live in a commensal or even symbiotic relationship with one another and with their human hosts. These microbes provide a large metabolic and genetic diversity which is only beginning to be understood. The most important characteristic of a healthy microbiome is one that is highly diverse, and not dominated by just a few species. It is important that this diversity is maintained by obtaining healthy amounts of many bacteria in appropriate amounts from the environment, food and supplements.
