What is the difference between noise isolating and noise cancelling?

Noise-isolating headphones reduce ambient noise through a snug fit in your ear, thereby keeping much of the external sounds out. Noise-canceling headphones use a different approach to achieve a similar result. They are designed to reduce any ambient noise by creating a sound wave that is 180 degrees out of phase with the external sound wave.
