Product review & video
We all recognise this as a symbol of Germany: the good old black-red-gold flag which apparently
has its origins in the early 19th century. But there’s another symbol in common use,
and its origins are much older. This is the Bundesadler, the Federal Eagle. You might think that the black, red and gold
of the German coat of arms were chosen to reflect the colours of the flag. But here is a 14th century depiction
of the Imperial Eagle, and it looks very similar to the modern symbol. That’s a bit of a coincidence. The shield was gold,
representing the status of Emperor; the eagle was black,
but beginning in the 14th century it became conventional to depict the beak and
talons of a heraldic eagle in red. The fact that these were the colours
of the modern German flag did, it is true, make it an obvious choice
for the modern coat of arms. It’s not a very accurate depiction
of an eagle, though.
