Description
There are actually three different herbs commonly called ginseng: Asian or Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng), American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), and Siberian "ginseng" (Eleutherococcus senticosus), the latter herb having many of the same effects as the first two even though it is in a different plant family. The root stock of American ginseng is chemically similar to Korean ginseng, but occurs naturally in the northeastern region of the US and is cultivated in the Midwest. Native Americans were familiar with this plant, the root of which they dried and ground into a powder. Powdered American ginseng is commonly encapsulated, but it can also be sprinkled directly on foods.
