There are 3 ways to charge the HY-016. When the unit is being charged in any of these methods the red LED indicator above the solar panel will illuminate.
1) Hand crank charging: Pull the end of the crank handle from its storage position and turn the crank either clockwise or counter clockwise. It is best to crank at a speed of under 130 revolutions per minute to prevent overheating the unit. Plus, it is recommended that after a few minutes of cranking to stop for a few minutes, then resume cranking. One minute of cranking will provide about 25 minutes of light and about 20 minutes of radio power (depending on the volume). [Power times noted are for an active unit with at least a partial charge. Some additional cranking time will be needed for a stored unit (i.e. 60 days) with no battery charge.]
2) Solar charging: Place the unit with the solar panel facing at the sun. Since there are so many factors that affect solar charging (sun brightness, angle, etc.) it is difficult to equate charging time to light or radio time, or the time needed to fully charge the unit.
3) USB charging: Plug the Micro-standard USB cable connector in the HY-016 Micro-USB jack and plug the USB cable connector into the USB power source like a computer or USB accessory jack in an automobile or RV. The HY-016 will fully charge in about two hours. Using the Radio When the Radio is turned off, OFF will appear in the control panel LCD display. Extend and adjust the antenna as needed for optimal reception. A headphone/earbud jack is included for private listening.
