In more ways than one the fire demon named Calcifer serves as the heart of the story of Howl’s Moving Castle. In this video I’d like to talk about the lore of this character in the Studio Ghibli film as well as a few notable details from the book that the movie is loosely based on. Calcifer is a fire demon that serves to fuel the Wizard Howl’s moving castle. He originated as a falling star that Howl was able to catch before he fell to earth and was extinguished. Howl then offered to keep Calcifer alive in the same way humans stay alive to which Calcifer suggested a magical contract between the two. In exchange for the wizard’s heart which would keep the fire demon alive, Howl would have access to Calcifer’s extensive magical abilities. Without the wizard’s assistance, Calcifer is confined to the hearth of the castle where he serves as a primary heat and power source for the structure. H
