Inside the ink cartridge there are 3 sponges. one for each color. Cyan, magenta and yellow. The sponge contains the Ink. The sponge is made of a material called hydrophobic foam. it's a synthetic porous rubber, imbued with water-repelling agents. The hydrophobic foam repels the ink, rather than absorbing it and controls the ink flow inside the cartridge. Put the cartridge on an area where you can tolerate a spill, or on some newspaper. Remove the label from top of the cartridge. Now the filler opening is visible. you'll see several holes. if you are not sure which is the right refilling hole, stick a needle down into each chamber. Then wipe the needle with paper, to check which is the correct filling hole. During the refill operation, a little Ink might come out of the top to the cartridge, if the cartridge is full.
