What's the difference and which one do I need? So let's start with our three strand. Three strand is a twisted nylon. This is what you see with dock lines. This is most commonly what we think of when we think of marine rope. Three strand is great because it is very abrasive resistant. It is a tough rope. This is going to work in every single windlass. Every windlass will take three strand, assuming you have the right size. It is also a little bit more cost effective.
