every forced air system furnace or air handler has to have a filter in it to clean the air and keep that equipment clean now at a minimum you'll want to use a one inch disposable filter such as this or upgrade to something better which would be an air cleaner but let's say you want to go with just the minimum and use that one-inch filter where does it go now the equipment does not often have a place inside it for a filter some equipment does some doesn't check the specifications but if you don't have a spot in your external return air duct work already for that one inch filter purchase one of these this is an external filter rack which will hold that it will install on the return air duct work right where that return air duct work connects to the furnace or air handler now this is a furnace and a common location for the external filter rack would be right here on the lower side now you'
