judith freeman [Applause] and rich cohen jonathan it's all yours um i agreed to open things up and um and we agree that we would we would begin just simply by each explaining a little bit how we came to chandler and and then what he came to mean to us um and rich and i were kind of comparing notes and he said do you really remember a time before chandler and i realized that i in a sense i couldn't uh in that he was uh part of my parents bookshelves i don't remember which titles but i do know that that his novels were probably among the first ventures i made beyond children's books when i began to be so curious that i couldn't keep myself from pulling titles out of my my parents shelves and you know in in that i associate him with a perplexing a variety of things some of which drew me right in and some which repelled me completely uh no matter what sort of encounter or relationship i mig
