Description
Smecta is a powder for oral suspension in sachets indicated in symptomatic treatment of: -Acute diarrhoea in children and infants in addition to oral rehydration and in adults; -Chronic diarrhoea (long-term diarrhoea); -Pain associated with digestive disorders affecting the oesophagus, stomach and/or intestine. Dosage: *Treatment of acute diarrhoea: -In infants and children: - up to 1 year: 2 packets a day for 3 days, then 1 packet a day. - 1 year and older: 4 packets a day for 3 days, then 2 packets a day. -In adults: on average, 3 packets a day. In practice the daily dose can be doubled at the start of treatment. *Other indications: -In infants and children : - up to 1 year: 1 packet a day - Between 1 and 2 years: 1 to 2 packets a day - 2 years and older: 2 to 3 sachets a day Method and route of administration: Oral route. The contents of the packet must be mixed into a liquid to form a suspension, just before use. In children and infants: the content of the packet can be mixed in a feeding bottle of 50 ml of water to be given at intervals during the day, or mixed with a semi-liquid food, such as broth, compote, puree, baby food... In adults: the content of the packet can be mixed into half a glass of water. Take preferably this medicine after meals in case of other indications. Possible side effects: Like all medicines, Smecta can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. -Constipation, usually resolving with the reduction of the dose, but that may in rare cases lead to treatment being stopped, -Flatulence, -Vomiting. During post-marketing experience, very rare cases of allergic reactions including urticaria, rashes, pruritis and angio-oedema have been reported. Cases of constipation worsening have also been reported.
