hello everybody David here and I have a solenoid now a solenoid is a coil of wire that produces a magnetic field in this case the coil is inside here and the magnetic field pushes this actuator forward like that when you disconnect the circuit the magnetic field collapses and because of the spring this actuator moves back into its original position if the spring wasn't there then it would just stay like this over here we have a flyback diode that's kind of a safety feature you see when the circuit is connected like this pretend it's connected the current flows like this through the red leads and then through the solenoid and then back out the black leads the solenoid is basically an inductor so when you disconnect the circuit it wants to keep the current flowing through this red lead this way and back out the black lead this way this diode allows the current to flow this way essentially
