The plant contains diosgenin, a compound used to make the first birth control pills. While diosgenin can be converted into progesterone in the laboratory, it cannot be converted into progesterone in the human body. Wild yam contains no progesterone, natural or otherwise, hence it is not biologically active in the body. The powdered herb is usually encapsulated as a dietary supplement. Precautions - Because compounds in this herb may exert estrogenic effects, it should not be used during pregnancy or while nursing. Avoid internal use if you have a history of a hormone-dependent condition, such as breast cancer.
