this is a linear potentiometer it's a slide potentiometer so we've got essentially your standard variable resistor but it's in a flat package and you've got this slider that can go up and down you'll have seen these in audio equipment things like that not many other places that I can think of but OHS suppose you can use get these four speed controllers in like trains and things like that not real life trains well maybe but in model things now I picked this up it's about kwid and I thought it'd be fun to just have a look at it and I haven't used it in a project yeah but it doesn't mean that I won't but it's an interesting one because it has two outputs and potentiometers can be used in different ways so you've got three pins here but you don't need to use all three sometimes you can just use two so the potential that you can act is a variable resistor but it can also act as a voltage div
