The Zorki camera is a post war copy of the Leica II. It was the second Leica II(D) copy produced by the mighty Soviet photo industry. Krasnogorsk plant joined FED in the "Leica" business in the late 40's. The very first Zorkis made by KMZ had FED engraving next to Zorki (named FED-Zorki, quite rare now). From the early 50's Krasnogorsk was on its own, and many successful LTM rangefinders were made until the glorious line of Zorkis was ended in the late 70's. Zorki-1 was in production from 1948 to 1956. The plant produced several modifications of the Zorki camera, mostly incorporating minor and cosmetic changes. With the various modifications, there were six main differences: 1) FED-ZORKI (1948-1949) Styled like the FED-1, but with larger collar around shutter release. Both FED and ZORKI names engraved on top. Early KMZ trapezoid logo without arrow. 2) Zorki type A (1949-1950) Identical in appearance to the FED-ZORKI, but new engraving on top has Zorki in cursive Cyrillic letters (3opkuu). 3) Zorki type B (1950-1951) Identical to the Zorki type A, but shutter release button is threaded for cable release. Speed dial engraved with larger numbers. 4) Zorki type C (1951-1953) Identical to Zorki type B, but henceforth using injection molded parts for the shutter assembly casing and the camera chassis. Chrome parts outlined by a decorative rim. Index mark on the release collar. Some examples with Cyrillic name only, others with Cyrillic and Latin names on same top housing. 5) Zorki type D (1953-1954) Identical to Zorki type C, but body casting redesigned with rim extended to the lens mount. This decorative element is part of the casting and cannot be removed from the body. Covering is synthetic leather. The inscriptions on the top plate are embossed rather than engraved. 6) Zorki type E (1954-1956) Identical to Zorki type D, but with the new international shutter speed sequence: B, 1/25, 1/50, 1/100, 1/250, 1/500. Serial number engraved on rear of top plate.
