all right today guys i'm going to show you how to use a otdr which stands for optical time domain reflectometer and what that does is it tests many different things about a fiber such as the distance um the signal strength which is how strong the light is it can tell you where bends breaks so on and so forth it can just about tell you anything you want to know about a fiber circuit right now i've got my otdr plugged in here to a jumper running into a patch panel and i'm going to test that port here now i do want to disclose that normally when you're shooting in a fiber optic circuit you want to use what's called a launch reel and the reason why you want to use a launch reel is it has a distance of about a thousand foot sometimes three 320 foot it just depends on what kind you buy the light coming out of this device which is otdr is sometimes so strong that it will reflect off the inside
