hi i'm mitch gallagher from sweetwater welcome to another episode of breaking the audio rules today we're taking a look at using a small diaphragm condenser microphone to record vocals this is one of those informal rules that many people abide by most of us just automatically reach for a large diaphragm mic when recording vocals but is it really a rule you should avoid breaking or is it a rule just because large diaphragm microphones are what we always see in videos and photos let's take a closer look and when taken literally the difference between a large diaphragm microphone and a small diaphragm microphone is the size of the mic's diaphragm that really is the difference the general rule of thumb is that a large diaphragm is one inch in diameter or larger while a small diaphragm like this microphone is a half inch or smaller but there's more to it than that here's a brief overview now
