Virginia State Flag by Flag It

The first flags in what is now the American state of Virginia were those of the European colonial empires that explored and settled there. The Spanish made early excursions into what is now Virginia during the sixteenth century before the English settled at Jamestown in the early seventeenth century. Virginia became one of the most important of Britain’s North American colonies throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In 1776, Virginia declared independence from Great Britain, along with 12 other British colonies, becoming one of the original states of the United States of America. At that time, the American flag had 13 stars for each existing state versus the 50 that appear on the national flag today. During the American Civil War, Virginia was part of the Confederate States of America. Virginia is officially the Commonwealth of Virginia. During the American Revolution, the
