hi I'm Gary Wentz with the family handyman and today I'm going to show you how to install the support brace for a ceiling fan we've built this little ceiling set to show you how it's done standard junction boxes like this one aren't strong enough to support the weight of a ceiling fan so if you want to replace a light fixture with a fan it'll have to install a support bracket before you even remove the old light fixture turn off the power and make sure it's off with a non-contact voltage tester with the old fixture remove your next step is to knock out the old junction box with a hammer and wooden block pull the cable out of the box you can leave the box inside the cylinder the new box will be supported by a ceiling fan brace you can get one at any Home Center slip the brace into the ceiling and Center it over the hole turn the shaft by hand to lock it between the joists slip the saddle
